"She Likes To Play" begins with a radio announcer improvising a thoroughly silly introduction for a pretend polka band that is in the midst of wild crowd as a recording is being made of the live performance, sponsored by a Portuguese stocking company, in a night club located somewhere in Europe, making "She Likes To Play" one of the most spontaneous songs on the album.
The backup vocals began as an experiment to determine how the TC-Helicon VoiceWorks processor behaved when it was set to create barbershop style harmonies based on the real input of a single falsetto voice. There were no lyrics for the backup vocals at the time, so they started with a "Ha! Ha! Ha!" series to get a sense of how the harmony sounded, followed by a "Wow!" glissando, which sounded so absurd that it was exciting in a patently surreal and hilarious way. Realizing quickly that the effect was phenomenal, a virtual festival of harmony phrases and styles followed naturally, at times having flavors from the Big Band Era, where they sound like a chorus of frantic soprano slide trombones muted in a "wah-wah' style with rubber plungers.
On its most simple and obvious level, this is a song about a young lady playing a Clarke Metal Kazoo, the finest English kazoo in the known universe. Of course, there might be other perspectives, but perhaps not.
